How This Journey Was Crafted

The legend of southern Gansu begins with explorers and scholars—Joseph Rock traveled through the Tibetan regions of Gansu in the 1930s, and his article "The Kingdom of Choni Lamas" in National Geographic stunned the Western world. Ma Hetian's "Ganzang Expedition Records" and Zhuang Xueben's westward photographic journals became foundational texts in anthropology and sociology. Such layered and plural cultural phenomena rarely concentrate in a single land: Tibetan, Han, Hui, and Mongolian peoples interweave while remaining distinct, nurturing a unique soil of philosophy and art. Over three centuries, imams, high lamas, and thinkers have ignited the flame of ideas here, turning this remote corner of the northwest into a true center of thought. Our route draws on this depth as its base, weaving together monasteries, mosques, villages, pastures, artisans, and markets into a living thread, opening southern Gansu through a humanistic lens so that in 8 days you may arrive at a profound understanding of this land.

At Bingling Temple, drift by boat through the Yellow River gorge to visit China's earliest dated Buddhist cave inscriptions and hear the caretaker recount millennia of Tibetan-Han cultural fusion.

Cross Tumen Pass from Han lands into Tibetan country; before the tens of thousands of murals at the Milarepa Buddhist Pavilion, discover the wisdom of "teaching the Dharma through song".

Day 1

Beijing – Lanzhou 北京 – 兰州

Fly from Beijing to Lanzhou. Explore Lanzhou's traditional Dongxiang community—a street with over 200 years of history where Hui and Dongxiang Muslims continue their traditional life. Dinner is arranged at a Dongxiang specialty restaurant featuring the unique whole lamb feast.

Day 2

Lanzhou – Linxia 兰州 – 临夏

After breakfast depart for Yongjing, Linxia, then take a speedboat to Bingling Temple. The inscription "First Year of Jianhong, Western Qin" (AD 420) inside Cave 169 makes Bingling the earliest-dated Buddhist cave complex in China. Visit the upper temple, trace monks' dwellings in the gorge, view the Tang-dynasty Future Buddha, and talk with the caretaker about Bingling's Tibetan Buddhist lineage and its most precious treasure—a Kangxi-era Kangyur manuscript. Continue to Linxia city in the afternoon; dinner is a traditional Muslim banquet.

Day 3

Linxia – Langmusi 临夏 – 郎木寺

Visit the traditional Muslim market and the four Sufi menhuan shrines, then head to Langmusi. Cross Tumen Pass into the Gannan Tibetan region, and at Hezuo city visit the Milarepa Buddhist Pavilion—a Kagyu Tibetan temple housing tens of thousands of murals, explored floor by floor. Continue along National Road 213 past Gahai Lake and the Guomang Wetland, the most important headwater recharge area of the upper Yellow River and a national nature reserve. Reach Langmusi by evening.

探访穆斯林传统市场、四大门宦拱北，前往郎木寺，途经【土门关】进入甘南藏区，到达合作市前往【米拉日巴佛阁】噶举派藏传寺庙（米拉日巴以歌传法，佛阁内有上万幅壁画，我们从一楼开始慢慢探寻）。随后经213国道至【尕海湖】、【郭莽湿地】，这里是黄河上游最重要的水源补给地，是国家级自然保护区。之后沿国道看两边的牧场抵达郎木寺。

Day 4

Langmusi 郎木寺

Walk to Kerti and Saitsi monasteries in the morning; Langmusi town straddles Gansu and Sichuan, divided by the Bailong River. Continue on foot to the river's source—draw a cup of water from the Yangtze's headwaters. In the afternoon, drive to Ruoergai and switch vehicles to reach a herder family deep in the Heihe grasslands, observing nomadic life under the impact of modernity. Return to Langmusi after dinner.

Day 5

Langmusi – Diebu 郎木寺 – 迭部

After breakfast head to Diebu forest in search of wild sika deer—the secret gorge here is the most important wildlife gathering area of the upper Yellow River. Reach Diebu in the afternoon and arrive at Zhagana for a light trek: revisit the route Rock once traveled, viewing Diebu's mystery through his lens. Walk from Dari Viewing Platform to Fairy Meadow (about 1 hour). Surrounded by mountains, four villages dotted across barley fields, forests, rivers, and scattered flocks—all forming an ever-shifting Tibetan landscape painting.

Day 6

Diebu – Xiahe 迭部 – 夏河

After breakfast depart for Xiahe county; at about 3 p.m. ascend to the Jieyou Pasture, set in the heart of the Sangke grasslands with sweeping views of the high-summer pastures. A pasture dinner of Tibetan dishes made from local ingredients follows, before continuing to Xiahe town in the evening.

Day 7

Xiahe – Lanzhou 夏河 – 兰州

After breakfast visit Labrang Monastery, arriving around 10 a.m. A monk will guide us through the Medical College, Butter Sculpture Hall, Manjushri Hall, Lion's Roar Hall, and the Esoteric College. Labrang is the largest Tibetan Buddhist center after Lhasa, known as "the Second Tibet". A special visit to a nunnery follows, to learn about local nuns' lives with commentary on the hall's murals. Afternoon is free for visiting the traditional market or a local café; return to Lanzhou by evening.

早餐后前往拉卜楞寺，10点左右抵达寺院后，由僧人讲解带领参观医学院、酥油花殿、文殊菩萨殿、狮子吼佛殿及显宗学院。拉卜楞寺是继拉萨之后最大的藏传佛教中心，被称为"第二西藏"。我们特别安排尼姑寺的探访，去了解当地尼姑的生活，专门讲解殿内壁画。下午自由活动，探访传统集市，也可去当地咖啡馆小憩，傍晚返回兰州。
