Design Philosophy

How This Journey Was Crafted

The Silk Road is a cultural artery that changed the world. It connects Eastern and Western civilizations, giving birth to Buddhism, Islam, Christianity, and Zoroastrianism; it gathers the great civilizations of China, India, Greece, Egypt, and Mesopotamia. And its core lifeline has always been Hexi Corridor in Gansu, China. From here, China's silk, porcelain, papermaking, and gunpowder reached the world; from here, Buddhist art traveled east, profoundly transforming the spiritual world of China and even East Asia. We follow the footsteps of the great translator Kumarajiva, from the White Horse Pagoda in Dunhuang to the translation centers of Wuwei; and we pay tribute to Xuanzang's perseverance on his westward journey—gazing into the emptiness of the five aggregates, crossing all suffering—becoming a spiritual totem of the Chinese people.

Day 1

Beijing – Lanzhou 北京 – 兰州

Fly from Beijing to Lanzhou. Check into your hotel. In the evening, walk along the Zhongshan Iron Bridge and the Yellow River scenic belt, then explore the local Muslim quarter—a community with 200 years of history where Hui and Dongxiang people maintain their traditional ways of life. Dinner is arranged at a Dongxiang specialty restaurant featuring the unique whole lamb feast.

Day 2

Lanzhou – Bingling Temple – Shandan 兰州 – 炳灵寺 – 山丹

After breakfast depart for Yongjing, Linxia, then take a speedboat to Bingling Temple. The inscription "First Year of Jianhong, Western Qin" (AD 420) inside Cave 169 makes Bingling the earliest-dated Buddhist cave complex in China. Visit the upper temple and speak with caretaker Lama Yang. Return to Lanzhou West Station and take the动车 to Shandan; tonight stargaze beneath the Qilian Mountains.

Day 3

Shandan – Zhangye 山丹 – 张掖

At dawn watch the Shandan Cavalry Farm's water-drinking and herd movement, then ride with a herder deep into the Qilian Mountains (1 hour horseback). A special route is arranged to seek wild deer (weather permitting). The farm has been in continuous use since the Han Dynasty, over 2,100 years, and remains Asia's largest cavalry breeding base. In the afternoon depart along the Qilian range toward Zhangye.

Day 4

Zhangye – Jiayuguan 张掖 – 嘉峪关

After breakfast visit the Big Buddha Temple, built in the Western Xia period; the hall houses Asia's largest indoor reclining Buddha. Then proceed to the Zhangye Danxia National Geopark, China's only composite zone of Danxia landforms and colorful hills. Continue to Jiayuguan; dinner features the famous Jiayuguan barbecue at the local workers' market.

Day 5

Jiayuguan – Guazhou 嘉峪关 – 瓜州

In the morning visit the Jiayuguan Fort, the western terminus of the Ming Dynasty Great Wall. After lunch explore the Wei-Jin mural tombs, dating back 1,600 years—the "Messenger Picture" that became China Post's logo originates here, China's earliest brick painting. Then proceed to Zixuan Winery to learn about the millennium winemaking history of Hexi Corridor; a private cellar tour and wine tasting is arranged.

Day 6

Guazhou – Dunhuang 瓜州 – 敦煌

Depart for Yulin Caves in the morning—the sister complex of Mogao, built continuously from the Northern Wei through the Tang and Yuan dynasties, now primarily for research and preservation. A special visit to the closed Caves 25 and 3 is arranged. In the afternoon view the contemporary sculpture "Child of the Earth." Arrive in Dunhuang by evening; after dinner watch the light-and-sound epic "Encounter Dunhuang" to prepare for tomorrow's Mogao visit.

Day 7

Dunhuang 敦煌

After breakfast visit the Mogao Caves. First watch the digital grotto film, then explore the caves with a professional guide. Known as the "Caves of a Thousand Buddhas," Mogao is a UNESCO World Heritage site with 735 existing caves, 45,000 square meters of murals, and 2,415 painted sculptures. A special visit to closed caves is arranged. In the afternoon visit the intangible cultural heritage artisan gallery, learn about pigments and painted murals from the start, and try hand-copying a mural yourself.

Day 8

Dunhuang 敦煌

Visit the Yumen Pass ruins and lightly trek the remnants of the Han Great Wall, gazing from the small Fangpan City at the solitude and steadfastness of ancient border guards. Then explore the Han Great Wall site and learn about the Han Dynasty border system. In the afternoon return to Dunhuang and visit Mingsha Mountain (Singing Sand Dunes) and Crescent Lake, riding camels across the dunes. In the evening enjoy an exclusive desert sunset dinner—sharing reflections under the bright moon and campfire.
